The Golden Temple is the holiest of Sikh temples located in the bustling city of Amritsar, Punjab, India. It is a major pilgrimage destination for Sikhs from all over the world and is a tourist attraction for those on an India tour. Construction began in 1574 and was completed in 1601. Additions to the temple continued over the years and 100 kgs of gold were added to the lotus shaped dome in the early 19th century. This is the most sacred and famous part of the temple that extends into the holy tank of water and is called Hari Mandir (Devine Temple). Every night the holy book is carried in procession from the Devine Temple to bed in another part of the temple. This fascinating ceremony can be observed at 11 pm in summer and 9:30 pm in winter. The communal dining room is another must see part of the temple. Volunteers cook food daily for 35,000 people. Everyone regardless of religion, caste or economic position in life is invited to the free food. The temple has become known as a haven for all regardless of religious affiliations seeking a peaceful retreat. It has been said that Buddha himself even sought the comfort of the temple for several days as he pondered the true meaning of life.
