The rising star of South American tourism, Colombia has cast aside its dark past and segued into a new age of peace, freedom and warm hospitality. Having been off the grid for so long, Colombians love sharing their landmarks and culture with the many visitors flocking to see what all the fuss is about.

It’s about exotic Caribbean ports like Cartagena, where the Spanish old town blends easily with beach resorts and an after-dark scene that always seems like Carnival time. Or colorful Medellin, where the flamboyant Uribe Palace offers dramatic contrast to the solemn Pablo Escobar Museum. And Bogotá, the highland capital, offers an enticing blend of old Spain around the Plaza Bolivar and modern art at the Botero Museum (the celebrated artist was Columbian born and raised).

Perched at the northern end of the Andes, the Colombian countryside is spangled with flower fields and coffee plantations, towering volcanoes and rainforest national parks, and off-the-chart sights like the Laguna de Guatape lake district with its brightly colored houses and monolithic rock formation.
