One of those places that really does have something for just about everyone, Thailand has been Southeast Asia’s most popular travel destination for half a century. That has a lot to do with beaches (and beach resorts) that rank among the best on planet Earth. But Thai food is also a global favorite. And away from the sand, Thailand offers a huge range of indoor and outdoor activities.

Bangkok bustles night and day with an energy found in few other cities. But there’s also peace and calm — on the grounds of the Royal Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the traditional Thai massage school at Wat Pho, and the riverside Temple of Dawn with its famous sunrise views across the City of Angels.

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in northern Thailand are renowned for their colorful night markets (food and crafts), hill tribe trekking and rainforest elephant sanctuaries. Ancient Thailand comes alive among the ruins of Ayutthaya. While islands like Phuket, Ko Samui and Ko Pha-ngan are the places to head for sun, sand, scuba, sailing, and full-moon parties.
